The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), established in 1935, was devoted solely to 20th century art when it opened and was housed in the War Memorial Veterans Building in the San Francisco Civic Center. In January of 1995, the museum celebrated its 60th birthday and moved to a new building on Third Street, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta.
This breathtaking 225,000-square-foot San Francisco art museum is considered the second largest single structure in the U.S. devoted to modern art. Visitors will appreciate the expansive, open spaces in twenty-three galleries hosting permanent and temporary exhibits bathed in natural light from above. This unique facility also houses the Koret Visitor Center, a Museum library, conservation studio, multiple-use event space, the MuseumStore and Caffé Museo.
